Planning The Bachelorette Party

So in continuation of the What-to-do? as a Maid of honour/bridesmaid in an Indian Wedding (Read Part #1 here), we planned a bachelorette shower for the bride.

I understand that a bachelorette is generally the norm for weddings abroad, but she and I have discussed this at length because we thought this would be her only opportunity to travel between engagement and marriage.

For those of you who are established in your careers, please understand that the following is from the life of people who have just entered into their industry. We didn’t have saved up money, nor does our field pay a lot.

We planned for a trip to either Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Colombo – but had to forget them because of budget issues. Later, we got to know that customs say that the bride should not stay away from home after engagement, till the date of marriage. So we had to, with a heavy heart, let go of our plans to Goa.

That left only Pondicherry and Chennai. The former was slowly taken out of the list because none of us could afford to rent a house (even on AirBnB) that was as cheap as we want it. So that left Chennai. The Bachelorette is a few days away, and I will let you know the details and how it went, soon after.

Till then, here’s a list of what all is to be done

  1. Decide on a list of people. If you are keeping this as a surprise to the bride, then this list will generally have all her girlfriends.
We didnt have it as a surprise to the bride, because she was the one who selected all the places (Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Goa…and she was the one who broke the news to us)
Moreover, the rest of the bachelorette is all her guy friends. None of the girls wanted to miss office….
  2. Figure out a date that is feasible to all – this takes a LOT of time. It’s easier to figure out the dates the bride is free and then seeing when everyone can make it.

  3. Budget
The party is either fully sponsored by all of you (her friends) or each person pays for themselves, including the bride – in which case, it’s better to involve her from the beginning.
  4. Venue!!!
This is of UTMOST importance. It all depends on how you want the day/days to go. If you want a tea party (like the had for Phoebe in Friends), you need to plan accordingly.

  5. How to EMBARRASS the bride – how to let everyone know that she is to be married
So I shall give a proper detailed list on how to do this, after the party is over. Makes it easier for me to tell you all those that did work out, and those that didn’t.

I shall also share the details of what all we had planned to do in all the four cancelled places, in case you decide to go there.

Until then,
Hugs, kisses and chocolate biscuits.
